Diagonal 643, 08028 Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain e-mail: [email protected] Antarctic benthos was prospected in search for anti-inflammatory activity in polar benthic invertebrates, in two different geographical areas: deep-bottoms of the Eastern Weddell Sea and shallow-waters of the South Shetland Islands. A total of 36 benthic algae and invertebrate species were selected to perform solubility tests in order to obtain extracts that were soluble at an innocuous ethanol concentration (0.2%) for cell culture, and further test them for anti-inflammatory activity. From these, ethanol extracts of ten species from five different phyla resulted suitable to be studied in cell macrophage cultures (RAW 264.7). Cytotoxicity (MTT method) and production of inflammatory mediators (prostaglandin E2, leukotriene B4, interleukin-1β) were determined at three extract concentrations (50, 125, 250μg/mL). Bioassays resulted in four different species showing anti-inflammatory activity corresponding to three sponges: Mycale (Oxymycale) acerata, Isodictya erinacea, and I. toxophila; and one hemichordate: Cephalodiscus sp. These results show that Antarctic sessile invertebrates may have great value as a source of lead compounds with potential pharmaceutical applications.

Persistent organic pollutants in benthic and pelagic organisms off Adélie Land, Antarctica.

The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), pentachlorobenzene (PeCB) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDE) were described in benthic and pelagic species collected off Adélie Land, Antarctica. Strong differences were observed among species, with reduced PeCB and HCB levels in benthic species, and elevated PCB levels in the Antarctic yellowbelly rockcod, th...

Recovery in Antarctic benthos after iceberg disturbance: trends in benthic composition, abundance and growth forms

The response of an Antarctic benthic community to iceberg disturbance was investigated using underwater photographs (1 m2 each) on the SE Weddell Sea shelf. This study: (1) characterises composition, coverage, number of patches and area of sessile benthic fauna, (2) describes faunal heterogeneity using MDS ordination and identifies ‘structural taxa’ of each recovery stage, and (3) analyses chan...

Anti-oxidant, Anti-inflammatory and Anti-proliferative Effects of Aqueous Extracts of Three Mediterranean Brown Seaweeds of the Genus Cystoseira

Seaweeds have caused an emerging interest in the biomedical area, mainly due to their contents of bioactive substances which show great potential as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-tumoral drugs. Despite the diversity in quality and quantity of the Mediterranean Tunisian coast flora, with its large contains of marine organisms and seaweeds, most of them have not yet been ...

The Distribution of Antarctic Marine Benthic Communities

The Polar Frontal Zone, although predominantly a surface feature, forms a natural northernmost boundary for defining the Southern Ocean, and relatively few benthic organisms have distributions which cross this boundary. Many Antarctic benthic plants and animals have circumpolar distributions but some broad geographical subdivisions may be made. Detailed studies of community distribution are few...
